One of only four NIH comprehensive centers for chemical biology and drug discovery, Sanford-Burnham Medical research is on the cutting edge of technology. Their goal to understand the human body and the biological secrets within are at the heart of what they are dedicated to at the Lake Nona location in Orlando. With nearly 900 scientists dedicating their lives and careers to the mysteries of drug discovery, stem cells, nano-medicine and translational medicine, Sanford-Burnham is working to discover the next generation of treatments for diseases from cancer to childhood illness.

With five research centers and world-class capabilities in drug discovery, stem cells, nanomedicine and translational medicine, Sanford-Burnham is working to discover the next generation of treatments for cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, infectious and inflammatory diseases, diabetes, childhood diseases and many other conditions.

Sanford-Burnham's permanent campus in Lake Nona, located in the southeastern region of Orlando, Florida opened in April, 2009 in an emerging life science hub known as Lake Nona Medical City.

The Orlando campus is home to the Diabetes and Obesity Research Center which focuses on collaborative research to accelerate discovery in the areas of metabolism, obesity-related diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Research efforts are augmented by advanced technology platforms, including ultra-high throughput small molecule screening, disease model phenotyping, metabolomics, genomics, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.
